In my opinion, worms is one of the most awesome games ever made. Its a simple 2D game, runs on almost any old computer, but the fun factor is at maximum. It is one of the games that I played very often when I was younger, and I still enjoy it to this day. But now I have a macbook air, which should be perfectly capable of handling the game, and looking through forums it seemed like it should work pretty easily with wine.
Step 1: Install wine
brew install wine
(if you don’t have brew, quick install it. A mac is not really complete without it. https://brew.sh/)
Step 2: Install Worms Armageddon
Run the install with wine: wine WormsArmageddon_220.127.116.11_setup.exe
Step 3: Enjoy!
Well, not really 🙁 Even though from the forums it seems like it would be this simple, it isn’t.
If you try to start the game, it will complain about not being able to find some audio files. This is due to the fact that they are compressed in a .tak format, and are usually automatically converted to .wav files when the game is installed. However, when running under wine, this part doesn’t run :/ how sad. So in my case, I hopped over onto a windows PC, installed the game, then took the contents of the worms/DATA/Wav/Effects folder, and copied over the .wav files. It shouldn’t complain anymore. Now the game starts, but you just get a black screen… nothing interesting. Luckily there is a folder inside the directory where worms got installed, its called Tweaks. (By the way you can access your wine C drive under OSX at: ~/.wine/c_drive/ ) So, go into the tweaks folder and run: wine regedit Renderer_Direct3D_9_Shader_Palette.reg This will switch over to using the Direct3D renderer which works under wine. If you wanna skip the intro screen there is a .reg file for that also, as well as many other tweaks.
Step 4: Get stuck 🙂
This is as far as I got. The game loads up, but I can’t click any option. Everything seems to be working fine, but no matter what I click, nothing happens. :/ Oh well, got this far, hope someone can solve the problem. Let me know if you have a fix. I’m running OSX 12.13.2 High Sierra
So far, I’m using Parallels to run a virtual windows, and it works fine, but would be so much nicer to be able to run it “natively” with wine.
